Info about Terrapin Creek:

 

Terrapin Creek is an excellent Class I river and part of the Alabama Scenic River Trail.  Around almost every bend there is a shoal or drop, requiring rapid careening around the rocks. The banks are lined with interesting rock formations, and the foothills of the Appalachians provide a breathtaking backdrop. The trip comes to an end with a wonderful freshwater spring flowing through the ground into the river. It’s icy cold and delicious on a hot day. Terrapin Creek is one of those “secret” little rivers you find in Alabama. Secret in that not many people know about the river or what a great ride it will provide. Overall the river is 400 miles in length, originating in Georgia, heading into Alabama, and eventually merging with the Coosa. The water is fairly clear, offering good views of turtles and lots of fish, including bass, panfish, and gar. Some locals say the minimum flow to paddle the river is 600 cfs, but we have paddled it during midsummer with a flow of around 300, and it was still superb. It is a beautiful and picturesque river. Floating it you will see many rock outcroppings jutting from the riverbanks, providing a stark contrast to the lush Appalachian foothills in the background. There are a good ten or fifteen shoals and three good-size Class I rapids on the river. The shoals are pretty much the pick-your-own-way type with no wrong way. Two of the most notable rapids are what are known as the Rock Garden and Split Rock.
